The Facilitating Factors of Breast Self-Examination Performance

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to identify the practice of breast self examination and its facilitators in order to provide a basis for education of breast self examination as one of the consisted of 141 women chosen from female teachers in some schools in Tae gu and its suburb areas. The data were collected from september 15th to October 15th in 1999. The study instruments were knowledge test, health belief, and self efficacy used in Chae Kyung Ok¡¯s study(1996). Analysis of the data was done by SAS program: ¥ö2-test, t-test, and logistic analysis. The results were as follows: The rate of compliance with breast self examination was 24.1%. The average score for the knowledge of breast cancer and breast self examination was 9.17. In the subcategories of health belief, there were shown 9.74 of susceptibility, 10.97 of severity, 12.51 of proficiency, 16.49 of barrier and 8.64 of motivative and self control. Also two types of self efficacies were shown as specific; 27.86 and general: 33.33. As the barriers of breast self examination, there were highly response rate of ¡¯not willing to do¡¯ and ¡¯not knowing how to do it.¡¯ About the facilitating methods of breast self examination, there were high response rate such as ¡¯repeated teaching the method,¡¯ ¡¯enforcing attitude¡¯ and ¡¯knowing the profit of self examination.¡¯ According to the comparison between complier and non-complier the complier had the more chance of meeting with breast cancer patient and experience heard about breast self examination. In addition, they had higher level of knowledge of breast cancer and self examination, susceptibility, severity, proficiency, barrier and motivation and self control of health. The further analysis was revealed that experience of meeting with breast cancer patient, severity of health belief, and specific self efficacy were significantly influenced on compliance with breast self examination. Finally results suggest that the development of education program with strategies to do regularly breast self examination through motives, specified practice method, and support to maintain compliance, simultaneously the program announcing severity of breast cancer and increasing specific self efficacy in which involved breast cancer patient is recommended to individuals.
